MHADA, known to build affordable homes, will now offer luxury homes at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The plan has been given an approval too. The building is pegged to have amenities that developers these days offer in the market. The homes are said to be close to 1300 sq ft carpet area. The prices aren't decided yet, but going by the market rate, the flats will be nowhere less than Rs 4 crore.

Bhushan Desai, executive engineer residential, Mumbai Board said, "We are not constructing ultra luxury homes, we have a category called High Income Group and the plan is to include luxury homes in this category."

There are talks that these buildings will have amenities including a swimming pool, gymnasium, club houses amongst others. "The amenities haven't been decided yet, but MHADA has decided to provide with those amenities that a private developer offers. This does include having a gymnasium, community hall and others, but this has not been confirmed," said Desai.

Though the exclusive High Income Group housing scheme by MHADA have faced backlash from several corners. Madhu Chavan, the chairman of Mumbai Board said, "Had it been in my tenure, I would have included some middle income, lower income and other category homes too. But this is a revenue making project which will be used to subsidise the other schemes, including the economically weaker section flats and the other income group flats. We are also constructing transit camps with low rentals, while we bear the maximum expenditure."

The Big Plan

The plan for constructing a high income group building at BKC has been in discussion for almost five to six years now. However, in the last two weeks the plan gained momentum.
